Gaza: Israël intensifies airstrikes ahead of a ground invasion.
Thousands of protesters responded to the call of a coalition of around forty left-leaning organizations. It was the first pro-Palestinian gathering in Paris that was not initially banned by the police prefecture.
According to the Paris police prefecture's count, the demonstration brought together approximately 15,000 people, and no incidents were reported by the prefecture.
Participants at this gathering in Place de la République chanted pro-Palestinian slogans, such as "Israel assassin, Macron accomplice" and "no peace without decolonization." This marked the first Parisian protest of its kind that was not initially subject to a ban by the Paris police prefecture.
The collective "For a Just and Lasting Peace between Palestinians and Israelis," which initiated the rally, displayed a banner at the base of the Republic statue, calling on France to "demand an immediate ceasefire" and to "stop the massacre in Gaza."
"You don't need to be Palestinian to be moved by what is happening. For me, this kind of gathering is a sign of despair," said Maya, a student who came to protest with friends but preferred not to disclose her full name.
"The government has a role to play in diplomacy. It should take firmer positions and not act as support for Israel," she added, speaking to AFP.
Bertrand Heilbronn, the president of the France Palestine Solidarity Association (AFPS), denounced, "Macron is giving Israel a license to kill."
Regarding the Hamas attacks on October 7, he stated that while the emotions are legitimate, their exploitation is criminal as it serves to justify a war of annihilation that the State of Israel is currently waging against the Palestinian people.
During the rally, a speaker called for a new mobilization the following Saturday.
The CGT, FSU, La France Insoumise, Union syndicale Solidaires, the France-Palestine Solidarity Association, MRAP, the Collective of French Muslims, and the French Jewish Union for Peace are among the forty organizations that are part of the coalition.
According to Israeli authorities, over 1,400 people have been killed in Israel by Hamas since October 7, and approximately 1,500 Hamas fighters have been killed in the counteroffensive that allowed Israel to regain control of the attacked areas.
